Explore San miguel

San Miguel de Allende is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its colonial-era architecture, cultural heritage, and vibrant artistic community. Founded in the 16th century, the city played an important role in Mexico’s independence movement. Built on a foundation of rose quartz (a stone symbolizing love and connection), San Miguel is often said to carry a distinctly romantic energy.

We chose this seemingly random city because so much of our relationship has been shaped by traveling together, and we wanted to share that spirit with our loved ones by offering a travel experience you might not have sought out on your own.

travel tips

Flights

We recommend flying into Querétaro International Airport (QRO), which is about an hour from the city’s center. If using google flights, please make sure your destination is listed as QRO. Depending on your departure city, google flights will automatically search for flights going to Mexico City if you search “San Miguel de Allende”. Mexico city is about a 3 hour drive from San Miguel de Allende.

Transportation

We are happy to help arrange for shuttle transportation for groups traveling together. We know that traveling to San Miguel can feel inconvenient and want do our best to make your travel day as smooth and easy as possible. Let us know how we can help.

If you are interested in arranging your own travel, Uber is available in San Miguel and affordable. Trips around the actual city of San Miguel cost $2-5 US dollars. Trips out of the city to and from the airport cost around $75-100. We recommend booking with a ride share app or finding a private driver, we would not recommend renting a car for your trip as San Miguel is a historic, walkable town and there are little to no parking options.

Currency

San Miguel uses the Mexican peso (MXN) as currency. U.S. dollars are accepted in touristy areas, but it’s best to pay in pesos.

  • Cash vs. Card: Many restaurants, galleries, and shops take cards, but small cafés, markets, and taxis can be cash-only.

  • ATMs: The safest option is to withdraw pesos directly from ATMs at banks. There are many ATMs in the town square of San Miguel if needed. Another option is to exchange USD for MXN at the airport prior to arriving.
